Christmas market shopping in Germany and where to stay

As a fan of Christmas markets and and Germany doing them really well I decided to share some knowledge and tips about visiting Christmas markets in Germany and where to stay. As an expat living in Germany myself I am looking forward to drink some ‘glühwein’ at some of those myself. It is a very nice tasting Christmas eve warm wine.

Lets start with which Christmas markets in Germany are in my opinion the best:

  • Berlin (estimations are that around 60 to 80 Christmas markets a year can be found here. I will share a few of the most beloved ones and options to stay close by for the best available prices)
  • Dresden (it is home to the oldest Christmas market in the World)
  • Nuremberg  (among the biggest Christmas market in the world!)
  • Munich (has around 30 Christmas markets)

Christmas magic at Gendarmenmarkt (Mitte)

Live music, food, glühwein all come together at the Gendarmenmarkt in the Berlin district Mitte. The view of French and German Cathedral help to give this market its magical touch. Choirs, dancing groups, clowns and acrobats make sure everyone enjoys itself. Not to mention the many shopping stalls to do your Christmas shopping and fill your bellies.

Weihnachtsmarkt in the Spandauer Oldcity (Spandau)

The traditional Spandauer Weihnachtsmarkt is for sure one of the most beautiful in Berlin. There are around 250 market-stands people offering their products and handmade art. Of course the good smelling food and drinks are part of this market as well. On Wednesdays it is big family day which means that some of the products will be sold with a good discount. Fridays there are free concerts at the market-square. But also other days you can find stage performances with Rock music, Choirs and brass orchestras. Interesting detail: Last year they started to serve Scandinavian snacks as well at some stands. A live Christmas crib with living animals is present as well.

Christmas market in front of the Charlottenburg Castle (Charlottenburg)

Since the year 2007 this is one of the most beloved Christmas markets of Berlin. A beautifully with lights decorated castle and castle park makes a nice Christmas market scenery. A nice highlight is that on 6 December St. Nicholas is visiting the Christmas market (see the guy dressed in red below) to give children and adults free sweets and small presents. Also there will be photo sessions with the ‘Engeln des Lichts‘ meaning angels of light (see the nicely dressed ladies below) Food is being provided in the open air restaurant with Austrian specialties. Another reason for visiting is that tours will be offered in this Christmas season through the castle.

Christmas market Striezelmarkt in Dresden

The smell of spices of baked things and hot glühwein can be smelled all over the city. The Striezelmart Christmas Market is estimated to be the oldest Christmas market in the world. For sure it is the oldest one of Germany. The first time this market was held in the year 1434. Also it has the largest Christmas Pyramid in the world. (see picture below) Enjoy the market stalls, people, food and nice ‘glühwein’ and do some Christmas shopping. Santa Claus is opening this Christmas market every evening in person.

Traditionally all hotels are booked for Fridays and Saturdays are booked out so if you are considering the go I suggest not to wait to long before you book a hotel.
